The UK has ambitious plans for growth. Investment is accelerating, demand is increasing, and businesses across critical sectors are being asked to deliver more than ever before. But as organisations look to scale, a critical question remains: does the operational capacity exist to support that growth?
That question sits at the heart of The Capacity Crunch, a new research report from DHL Supply Chain. Based on research with over 200 senior business leaders across advanced manufacturing, life sciences, energy and infrastructure, and data centres, the report explores whether the workforce, infrastructure and operational capabilities needed to support future growth can keep pace with rising demand.
The findings point to a growing disconnect between demand and capacity. While 72% of businesses expect demand to increase over the next two years, nearly four in five (78%) believe they will face a capacity crunch within 24 months.
Organisations are responding. Almost three in five (58%) expect capital expenditure to increase over the next 12-24 months, demonstrating strong intent to invest and grow. But with expansion projects often taking months, or even years, to become operational, many leaders remain uncertain whether current plans will be enough to meet future demand.
For supply chain, operations and business leaders, the implications are significant. Organisations that fail to address looming capacity constraints risk higher operating costs, slower delivery, and missed growth opportunities as demand accelerates.
