Associated British Ports Humber ramps recruitment at IRFT

Associated British Ports Humber is recruiting for 24 roles within the Immingham Renewable Fuel Terminal (IRFT).

The roles are broken down between 20 operative roles and four Assistant Operations Managers. The terminal is located within the Port of Immingham, which is the UK’s largest port by volume as well as being the largest handler of dry bulk cargo.

The terminal has the capacity to handle over 20 million tonnes of bulk cargo each year. There are already over 100 people employed at IRFT and the terminal is the world’s largest biomass facility, handling over 6.4 million tonnes of cargo annually.

IRFT is at the forefront of the supply chain in renewable power generation from biomass. The facility supports Drax Power’s biomass-fuelled units. Drax Power is the world’s leading producer of wood pellets and supplier of renewable energy solutions.

There has already been significant investment in the infrastructure and plant at the Port of Immingham to develop blending and storage facilities to secure Drax’s emerging additional supply chain of non-wood pellet biomass.

The investment in IRFT includes upgrade of the sheds’ safety systems, expansion of the lorry load in facility and the purchase of machinery.

Simon Bird, Regional Director, said: ‘This is an exciting opportunity to join the team, with investment flowing into the terminal and more upgrades to be finished in 2021, it really shows how great an industry the renewable sector is.’

The operative roles’ responsibilities include training to operate equipment, to be safe when working, meeting targets set by managers, and cleaning of equipment and site. The roles require an active approach to identifying improvements and opportunities and an ability to develop good working relationships with other port users, tenants and customers.

The Assistant Operations Managers’ responsibilities include being accountable for the health and safety of all operatives, leading through example and acting as a role model for safe ways of working and productivity, coaching team members and identifying team goals to evaluate team progress.

Drax Power Station is critical national infrastructure at the heart of the UK’s energy system, supplying 5% of the country’s electricity from the country’s largest renewable power generator and the biggest decarbonisation project in Europe.

Humber International Terminal is part of the Humber ports that have been working hard, 24 hours a day, in keeping Britain trading. The Port of Immingham is a vital resource and powers one in ten homes in the U.K.

New drone technology transforms ABP’s asset management, in partnership with PWC and Aerodyne

Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading and best-connected port owner and operator, announced it has successfully embedded drone technology into its asset management practices and policies, following an 18 month program

It utilised PwC’s specialist drone digital transformation team to support drone adoption and transformation in asset management, while Aerodyne Group, a DT3 (Drone Tech, Data Tech and Digital Transformation) solutions provider, was selected as ABP’s drone service provider, bringing its extensive experience and world-class technology to bear.

ABP’s 21 ports and rail freight terminals around Britain offer unparalleled marine, road and rail access to domestic and international markets, and include 87km of quay and 1.4 million sqm of covered storage.

ABP’s Group Director Safety, Engineering and Marine, Mike McCartain, said: “After an initial proof of concept with PwC, we realised drones could offer significant value to our asset and property inspections, using drone and data technology integrated with a secure cloud platform. They are safer, faster and more cost-effective, enabling us to optimise operations and reduce risks. 

“The cloud platform we’ve built with our partners gives our teams simple and intuitive access to the drone information, including the ability to build inspection reports in the browser, aligned to our existing asset management systems.  Without a doubt, this is a big step forward in ABP’s digital transformation and safety journey using the latest available technology.”

Development in the past 6 months have been focused on extensive site testing with Aerodyne across 8 locations in the UK. Analysis and data collection from the flights has demonstrated considerable cost saving and benefits; operations were safer, 25% more cost effective; and took 55% less time compared to traditional methods for selected assets. 

In parallel, ABP worked with Aerodyne and PwC to build a cutting-edge drone visual asset management system which enables its teams to view asset condition dashboards, asset management information and build inspection reports, with only a browser required to access.

ABP’s next project is the development of an in-house drone capability to complement the Aerodyne solutions and it has just retained PwC’s specialist drone team to assist with this critical implementation.

ABP invests in Port of Lowestoft to support UK Southern North Sea energy sector

Associated British Ports (ABP), the owner and operator of the Port of Lowestoft has invested more than £250,000 in the construction of a new fuel bunkering facility to support the UK Southern North Sea (SNS) energy sector.

Yesterday, the bunkering facility received its first fuel from the vessel, Thun Grace, which called at the Port of Lowestoft on behalf of Peterson UK and GEOS Group as part of a strategic partnership to carry out fuel services. GEOS Group provides fuel directly from a UK refinery to various ports around the UK.

John Shade, UK Fuel Manager, said: “This new fuel bunkering facility provides operators from the oil and gas and offshore wind sectors with another reason to use Lowestoft as their port of choice, with capability and capacity now in place to service any vessel that comes into the port. We are pleased to have worked in partnership with ABP and GEOS Group to create a competitively priced solution in a very convenient location.”

Barry Newton, Director, GEOS Group, added: “We are delighted to be able to provide a fuelling facility in Lowestoft, both supporting and adding to port services, and are excited to work with ABP in the development of the port going forward.”

Construction of the new facility, which included the raising of bund walls, began in November 2019 and was completed on schedule by the local contractor Brooks and Wood.

“With this new bunkering facility our marine teams are able to support the UK SNS energy sector 365 days a year, making sure that our customers get a consistent, cost-effective and efficient service.”

Since the start of ABP and Peterson UK’s long-term business partnership in January 2019, the two companies have celebrated a number of successes, including reaching the milestone of handling 100 vessels in October 2019. Since then, this figure has grown to more than 350 vessels, which have called at the port.

Peterson UK operates a wide range of warehouses and other cargo and logistic services from the Port of Lowestoft, including fuel bunkering to support the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors being supplied from its Lowestoft Supply Base.
