Strengthening supply chains with Cyber Essentials Certification

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in cyber attacks, resulting from vulnerabilities within supply chains, including many high-profile incidents. To address this challenge, the UK Government is encouraging organisations to adopt Cyber Essentials certification, a scheme designed to establish a minimum baseline of cyber security.

Managed by IASME, the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) sole Delivery Partner for Cyber Essentials, the scheme focuses on five core technical controls that, when implemented correctly, protect organisations from the majority of common cyber attacks.

Cyber Essentials is a gamechanger for supply chains

Cyber Essentials certification offers a practical, affordable, and effective way to enhance supply chain security. Here’s why:

  • Confidence in supplier security: A Cyber Essentials certificate provides assurance that a supplier has implemented key technical controls to defend against common cyber threats. Other standards or certifications do not necessarily provide this specific assurance.
  • Affordable and accessible: Cyber Essentials is designed to be achievable for organisations of all sizes. Its affordability makes it a viable option for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which often form the backbone of supply chains.
  • Streamlined supplier assessments: By requiring Cyber Essentials certification, organisations can reduce the time spent on lengthy security reviews. Suppliers also benefit from clear, standardised expectations, avoiding the need to respond to complex or repetitive questionnaires.
  • Global applicability: Cyber Essentials is not limited to the UK. Organisations worldwide can achieve certification, making it a valuable tool for securing global supply chains.
  • Verification made easy: The Cyber Essentials Supplier Check Tool allows organisations to quickly verify which suppliers hold Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus certification, simplifying the process of assessing supply chain security.
